Paul’s prayer for the Colossians

March 11th, 2021

In Colossians 1:3-14 Paul prays for the Colossians and their church.

His prayer takes the following pattern. He gives thanks, prays for them and finishes with some “then” statements.

1. Paul gave thanks for their…

  • Strong faith in the Lord Jesus
  • Love for all God’s people everywhere

These are two great things to be known for by an Apostle. Both as a church and individuals.

2. Paul then prays for them. He asks God for…

  • Complete knowledge of God’s will for them
  • Spiritual wisdom and understanding
  • Strength in God’s glorious power
  • For endurance and patience

As a Christian I would love someone of Paul’s stature to be praying that for our church and it’s members.

3. Paul then finishes with two then statements as a result of his prayer…

  • Then they will all live in a way that honours God
  • Then they will produce every kind of fruit (good deeds)

I love the way that Paul prayed for the Colossians. He encouraged them by giving thanks for two good things, prayed that they would grow and be strengthened in God and His will, and he gave them some reasons why.

I don’t know about you, but if I received an letter from an Apostle that said those things, I would be both encouraged and inspired to greater things.

How about you?
