A cure for overthinking

September 12th, 2017

Many people I speak to tell me they overthink things a lot. They say they just can’t put things down they are worried about and are often awake in the night thinking things through.

I used to be like this. I would lie awake for hours in the night thinking things through (read as worrying).

One thing that really helped me in a practical way is meditating on the Word of God. In a number of places God tells us to meditate on His Word.

Some of my favourites include…

Psalm 1:1-3 – Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.

Joshua 1:8 – Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Psalm 145:5-7 – 1 I will meditate on Your majestic, glorious splendor and Your wonderful miracles. 6 Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue; I will proclaim Your greatness. 7 Everyone will share the story of Your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy about Your righteousness.

When we meditate on God and His Word it helps us to take our focus off this life and it’s problems. For many, worrying about upcoming events is the key to lying awake at night.

When we focus on God and His Word we see our lives through the lens of eternity. When we do that, our problems or worries get smaller, and God gets bigger in our vision.

If you are someone who worries a lot or overthinks things, try carrying a Scripture or passage around with you and read it regularly. Meditate on it. This mean to ponder, think through, consider it.

The key I have found is this: If your mind is full of God, it is hard to overthink or worry about things.

God Bless,
