Listen and Learn

June 1st, 2017

I have been in my role as Pastor of the best church in the world now for about 10 months (yes I am a bit biased!). One of the things I have tried to do is listen to people’s stories.

I think when you come into a new community for the first time it is important to just listen. Listening to people’s stories of their family, work/retirement, how they were saved, how long they have been at the church, what they are doing well at and/or what they are struggling with.

Listening and really hearing is the best way to find out where people are at and how they are travelling. It also helps to see where they are growing and what they are passionate about.

As I have moved around to each person or family I haven’t wanted to be too spiritual or deep when I visited them, I just wanted to listen. To see where they think they fit in to the world and the church.

It has been a wonderful time of getting to know everyone. It has been a real blessing to hear everyone’s stories and to get a glimpse into their lives.

If you are a new Pastor I would encourage you to listen more than you speak when you first arrive at your new church. Maybe even for the first year or so.

God Bless,
