An exhortation to proper living

October 7th, 2016

I was reading 2 Thessalonians 3 this morning and I came to verses 6-10…

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from all believers who live idle lives and don’t follow the tradition they received from us. For you know that you ought to imitate us. We were not idle when we were with you. We never accepted food from anyone without paying for it. We worked hard day and night so we would not be a burden to any of you. We certainly had the right to ask you to feed us, but we wanted to give you an example to follow. Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.””
‭‭2 Thessalonians‬ ‭3:6-10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Two thoughts really grabbed me.

1. The warning to stay away from idle believers who do not follow the tradition/teaching that Paul taught.

2. That those unwilling to work should not eat.

These two things remind us the importance of following good teaching and the importance of working hard.

Paul taught others what it is to follow Jesus and His commands. He encouraged them to imitate him as He imitated Christ in 1 Corinthians 11:1.

He also modelled what it is to work hard as a tent maker to support himself and preaching and teaching the Gospel. He had a right to be supported as a Bible teacher but he chose to support himself.

These are good reminders for us today. We need to follow good teaching and work hard as whatever we do. Colossians 3:23 reminds us to work as though we are working for the Lord and not for man.

As this passage heading in this reading says, it is the proper way to live.

God Bless,
Dave
