Hobbies, relaxing and common ground

July 10th, 2016

I have met a few people over the years that only talk about God or the Bible all the time. When they are not talking about God or the Bible, they are talking about their ministry work.

While I admire their commitment to God and their faith, I wonder if they have anything else in their life? Because when you talk to them you wouldn’t know.

Now I know we are supposed to set our hearts and minds on things above (Colossians 3:1-2) and seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33), I have written about this many times here on this blog.

However, I think it is important to have hobbies or interests to have down time where we just relax. I also think having other interests helps us to relate to those around us and find common ground.

I think it is important to schedule things that we enjoy. In my case it is going to the gym, spending time with family, watching footy, bushwalking, following cycling races like the Tour de France, and watching sci-fi.

These things help me to wind down and hopefully make me a bit more interesting to the people I meet who do not share my faith. They also give me connection points into their world too.

God Bless,
Dave
