Serving Jesus out of our love

October 24th, 2015

Today I was reading and reflecting on John 21:15-17. It is the passage where Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him. It says…

15  After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these? ” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “You know I love You.” “Then feed My lambs,” Jesus told him. 16  Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “You know I love You.” “Then take care of My sheep,” Jesus said. 17  A third time He asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, You know everything. You know that I love You.” Jesus said, “Then feed My sheep.

Something I find interesting in this passage is that Jesus asks Peter to feed and take care of His lambs and sheep because he loves Him.

Jesus doesn’t say that Peter will love everyone that he serves, but if he loves Jesus he will serve out of his love. This reminds me of a quote I read from Mother Theresa a while back. She said this about serving others…

“I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, this is hungry Jesus, I must feed him. This is sick Jesus. This one has leprosy or gangrene; I must wash him and tend to him. I serve because I love Jesus.”

In these three short verses and the quote from Mother Theresa, we find a lot about what it is to serve and love Jesus. Loving Jesus means we will serve Him by serving others.

God Bless,
Dave
