Caring friends with truthful words

October 18th, 2014

Today’s verse of the day on my Bible app is Proverbs 27:5-6. It says, “An open rebuke is better than hidden love! Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy”.

Over the years I have a few friends or Pastors who cared enough to give me an open rebuke in season. It was hard for them to say, but it was what I needed to hear to snap me out of a rut or take me on to the next things.

Often at first I didn’t take it well. I didn’t think it was a word from God, nor did I think it was a word in season and it hurt. In time though, once I had calmed down, I realised it was what I needed to hear.

An open rebuke from a friend can be like that. It can hurt deeply, especially from someone who we really respect and have let into the inner circle of our lives. But I think it is something we all need sometimes.

As today’s verse says, the wounds of a sincere friend are better that many kisses from an enemy. It is better to hear the truth from a friend that takes us to new levels in God and His will, than receive false encouragement that keeps us where we are.

God Bless,
Dave
