Helping to get the message across

November 19th, 2013

Last Sunday in my message I tried something different to get the message across and hopefully help it to stick in peoples minds.

I was preaching on Colossians 3:1-17. I called the message “Five things to remember about living the new life in Christ”. Part of it touched on putting off your old nature (Col 3:5) and putting on your new nature by clothing yourself in it (Col 3:12).

To illustrate the point I put on a black shirt with the old natures habits and attitudes stuck on a labels. I prayed and asked God to help me rid these old bad habits that belonged to my/our old nature.

Then after I took the shirt off I put on a white shirt with the new natures habits “tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience”.

As I looked around I could see the illustration was helping the congregation to understand it is like clothing yourself. In the same way we put on the armour of God (Ephesians 6), we need to clothe ourselves.

To finish off the passage I talked about being Christ representative or ambassador wherever we went (Col 3:17, 2 Cor 5:20). I put on a paper crown with the word Ambassador on it.

From the video I could see it was not the best outfit, but I am hoping it will help our church members to remember the message a little bit longer.

God Bless,
