Take a sacrifice with you

July 7th, 2013

We were reading 1 Samuel 16:1-13 just now. This is where God tells Samuel to go to Jesse and anoint one of his sons as King.

In verse two Samuel says, “How can I do that? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord responds, “Take a heifer with you…and say that you have come to make a sacrifice to the LORD.”

I had never noticed this before in the text. God gave him a “cover story” so as not to raise suspicion from the locals or risk the jealousy or wrath of Saul.

Samuel did not have to lie or risk death as God gave him another reason for being there.

It reminds me of Christian Missionaries who go overseas to closed countries to share the Gospel while they work as a teacher or aid worker. They have another reason for being there too.

It is interesting how you can read a text many times and then one time God shows you something completely different to what you have seen before!

God Bless,
Dave
