Called to ministry?

October 6th, 2010

A number of times over the years I have been asked if I was “called” to ministry. By this I guess people mean has God specifically spoken to me and “called” me to do what I do. Over the years a number of things have taken place. Today I want to share one of them.

One night in 1998 I was awake in bed at about 2.00am and felt that I had to get up and pray. While I was praying I felt the urge to go to my study and read my Bible. It was almost like I was compelled to go and do this. As I prayed and flicked through my Bible, I came to the book of 2 Corinthians in the New Testament. As I flicked through I paused at the following text.

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 says “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God”.

This passage really stood out to me like it was twice the size of the rest of the text. It also felt like a spot light had been shined upon it. I was mesmorised for a time and read it over and over. I could also feel the presence of God very strongly in the room. It was definately a special time for me, one where I felt that God had impressed this verse on me for a reason. I had a real sense of call from that moment on.

As time went on a number of other things happened to build upon this experience, but this was one of the events that has always stayed with me. It has inspired me to tell others about Christ, His great love for them and His wonderful plan of salvation.

God Bless,
