What is our assurance of salvation based on?

October 2nd, 2010

In yesterdays post I shared some verses from the Bible that show us we can be assured of salvation before we die. But what is our assurance of salvation based on?

Here are three things I believe our confident assurance can be firmly anchored to.

1. On God choosing us – The Bible tells us that God chose us before the foundation of the earth. He chose us to be His own and holy and blameless before Him. Ephesians 1:4-8 says…

“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will–to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding”.

2. On God keeping us safe – God promises to keep us safe in salvation. Jesus says that no-one can snatch us out of His hand. John 10:28-30 says…

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

3. On God’s powerful love – Our assurance of salvation is based on God’s powerful love for us. The Bible tells us that nothing in all of creation can separate us from God’s love that is found in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:35-39 says…

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

We CAN be assured of God’s love and salvation. God chose us before the foundations of the earth, He holds us in His hand and His love is so powerful that nothing can separate us from Him and the salvation He promises to us in Christ Jesus.

God Bless,
