Finding organic church book

May 5th, 2010

I received  my copy of Frank Viola’s book “Finding Organic Church” the other day. I have read the introduction and the first couple of chapters. So far it is very interesting.

I have always enjoyed reading about organic church, simple church or house churches as they are often called. There is something appealing in it for me. I really like the idea of journeying with a small group of people and sharing our faith and life together.

Other things that is very appealing is the simple structure of it, the fact that there is no building to maintain/pay for (as they generally meet in homes), and all the members seen as ministers and are encouraged to minister to each other and those they come in contact with.

I really like the idea of not having to pay for a building to meet in once a week and also pay one person to be the “minister”. I like that the Bible teaches we are all ministers (1 Peter 2:9) and are all called to reach others (Matthew 28:18-20).

In saying this though, I am a member of my local “traditional” church and really enjoy that too. That is where I feel called to be. But reading books like this does encourage me to simplify the way I do church and the way I think about church.

Over the next few weeks I will share any insights I gain from the book if anything really jumps out or inspires me.

God Bless,
