What happened after Jesus’ death

April 3rd, 2010

In yesterdays post we looked at Jesus’ hours on the cross. Today I want to look at what happened straight after Jesus died. Here are a few of the things that are recorded in Scripture.

1. The earthquake and the tearing in two of the curtain in the Temple (Matthew 27:51) – the tearing of the curtain or veil symbolised that anyone could enter the presence of God and not just Priests.

2. Tombs broke open and many holy people were raised to life (Matthew 27:52)

3. The Centurion exclaimed, “Surely this was the Son of God” (Matthew 27:54) – He had witnessed most of the events leading up to the crucifixion and had come to this conclusion.

4. The thieves beside Jesus had their legs broken (John 19:34) – this was so they could not run away (if they were able to get off or were helped off the cross) in the confusion of the earthquake when the guards fled their posts.

5. Jesus’ side was pierced (John 19:34) – this to make sure He was dead as the guards fled their posts. It was interesting to note they did not break His legs. Prophecies many years before said no bones would be broken in His body.

6. Jesus’ body was taken by Joseph of Arimathea and placed in a nearby tomb ( John 19:38-42)

7. The tomb was sealed by a big stone and a guard placed there (Matthew 27:66)

But that is not where the story ends. Stay tuned!

God Bless,
