Confirmations that Jesus was the Messiah

January 6th, 2010

I was just looking at the second reading (Luke 2:1-52) in the “Two weeks in the life and Teachings of Jesus” Bible reading plan I put on my website last week. In this reading we really see how God confirmed Jesus was the Messiah the Jews had been waiting for. There were a number of people and heavenly beings that were mentioned in this passage.

1. Angels and heavenly hosts – in verses 8 & 9 we see Angels appeared to the shepherds in the fields telling them about birth of the Messiah. Then they were joined by a heavenly host singing praises about Jesus. God used heavenly beings as part of the confirmation that Jesus was the Messiah.

2. Simeon – when Jesus was eight days old He was taken to the Temple (v21). The passage tells us that Simeon, who was a devout Jew who lived in Jerusalem, was told by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he saw the Messiah (v26). When he saw Jesus in Mary’s arms, he recognised Him as the Messiah and sang his song of peace and joy which is still sung in many churches today.

3. Anna – Anna was an elderly prophetess who spent all of her time in the Temple praying to and praising God. As soon as she saw the baby Jesus she recognised who He was. The passage tells us that she told everyone about God’s coming salvation and redemption (v38). God used prophets to tell of Jesus’ coming and He used a prophet to confirm Jesus was the Messiah.
