OpenOffice.org free software

June 4th, 2009

In the current climate of the Global Finanical Crisis and things getting tight moneywise for many people, I thought I would tell you about one of my favourite free programs – OpenOffice. I have been using this for about two years after a friend told me about it.

The website describes OpenOffice this way…

OpenOffice.org 3 is the leading open-source office software suite  for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages  and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.

The thing I like about OpenOffice is that it has all the same programs that are available in the Microsoft Office suite of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access. You can also open documents created in these packages and either save them in OpenOffice format or back in Microsoft format.

Another great feature is that you can create PDFs directly from the program without having to own Adobe Acrobat. Once you have finished your document you hit the PDF button and it exports it to PDF. They also have an extension where you can import PDFs into OpenOffice and make minor edits and save them again.

And yes, the best thing of all is it if free and you can instal it on as many computers as you want! Which is great if you are a family with multiple computers.
