Old boots and new boots

May 18th, 2009

I was talking to a friend of mine today who is a Pastor in town. He shared about his message that he brought yesterday and how he talked about putting off the old self and putting on the new self.

He started by sharing from Ephesians 4:1 that says, “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received”. Then he moved on to Colossians 3:1-17 that talks about putting off the old self (old nature) and clothing yourself with your new nature.

The thing that I found especially good was the illustration he used. He had an old holey pair of work boots on and said, “Old ways can be comfortable and familiar and safe, whereas new ways can be uncomfortable and unfamiliar, therefore making them appear unsafe. Like old and new boots. It isn’t until you wear them for a while (or walk in our new selves) that they become more comfy and fit better and not seem so foreign”.

I really thought that was a great illustration to get the point across. Everytime I read that passage now I will remember an old pair of holey work boots that need to be taken off and replaced…just like our old and new natures!

PS. I have an article on my website that talks about the passage from Colossians 3. You can access it here
