Daylight Saving Vote today

May 16th, 2009

In Western Australia we have the referendum on Daylight Saving. We have to vote either yes or no if we officially want daylight saving in WA each year. I can see that there are a number of positives and negatives for both sides of the vote.

In general, the “yes” voters want it because it gives you an extra hour of daylight at the end of the day. Many people use this time to exercise, have family picnic dinners or head to the beach. It seems a lot of the yes voters live close to the coast. Some people will vote yes so we are inline with the other states in Australia and so they can do business easier.

The “no” voters seem to be those who like to get up early in the morning and use that time for exercise or to get things done before the heat of the day begins. Many of them don’t like having the heat of the day still beating down into the evening. Some might also have young kids who go to bed later and/or they might live away from the coast.

For me personally I am not a big fan of daylight saving. I live 300km from the coast and we don’t get sea breezes in the afternoon to cool things down. I also like to get up with the sun and get things done or exercise before the heat of the day. I am also with a lot of other country people like farmers who just don’t like it.

It will be interesting to see how it goes today. We have had three or four referendums on it over the last 25 years. Each time it was voted as no. However this time we have had a three year trial first for people to get used to it. And we have many more people who have come to WA as a result of the mining boom from the east coast who are used to having it each year.

One thing for sure is it will be a close vote either way. From my persective and a lot of other country people, I hope it is a no vote.
