When God seems silent

May 14th, 2009

I have found that there are times in your Christian walk when God seems silent. You might be praying and asking a specific question, but heaven seems silent. It is not that God is not speaking to you about other things, but the question you are asking is not being answered. In these times I have a few things I try to do.

1. Be patient – when we are asking a specific question or seeking direction we need to realise we have to be patient. The Bible tells us God has a plan for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11) and that He has prepared things for us to do long ago (Ephesians 2:10). I try to remember God has things under control and that at the right time He will speak and guide me. I can’t try to rush Him!

2. Do good – while you are waiting put your hand to things you know are good and will build His Kingdon. I am waiting on an answer at the moment, but I am trying not to sit still. I am serving in my local church, writing on this blog, helping my wife and kids with school and generally trying to be a Christian presence wherever I go. I always remember the old saying, “It is easier for God to steer a moving vehicle”. Do good while you are waiting for your answer.

3. Give God your ear – sometimes we don’t hear God because we are not taking the time to listen and tune in to Him. Each day I try to sit down and give God space to speak. I try to be like Samuel and say, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). I also take time to walk up my rock each week and really tune in to Him. If I am asking I need to give Him space to answer!

So if you are waiting on an answer to prayer or seeking guidance from God, please remember that you need to be patient, to do good while you are waiting and take the time to really listen out for an answer. I have found many times in the past that God answers our prayers in His timeframe and that He is never late.

God Bless,

Dave
