God’s long term adoption plan

April 6th, 2009

When reading through the Bible recently I came across Ephesians chapter one (Eph 1:1-14). In this passage I found three interesting things about God’s long term adoption plan for our salvation.

1. Our adoption has always been His plan

Verses 4 & 5 says, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will”. God’s heartbeat has always been that we would become His children, even before the world was created it was His good pleasure and will for us to be a part of His eternal family!

2. Our adoption was achieved through His Son

Verses 7 says, “In him [Jesus] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace”. This tells us that when Jesus died on the cross, He died to pay the price for our sin that separated us from God. As a result we are brought back to right relationship with the Father as we trust Jesus for our salvation. Our salvation was achieved by Jesus and it is open to all who trust Him.

3. Our adoption was sealed by the Spirit

Verse 13 & 14 tells us that, “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession”. The Holy Spirit is not only our comfort and helper in this life, but He is also a promise of things to come – eternity with God.

In this Ephesians passage we see that it was always God’s plan to adopt us as His children, that it was achieved through Christ’s death on the cross and it is sealed by the gift of the Holy Spirit who is our guarentee of an incredible future inheritance.
