Some Good News

One of the most memorised verses that evangelists use would be Romans 3:23. It says, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard“. It tells people that no matter who we are, we have all missed the mark when it comes to living a righteous life in God eyes. However if we are to get the full picture and understand this verse we need to read the verse 22 and a few verses afterwards in 24-26.

Verse 22 says, “We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. When you read verse 22 first God tells us the remedy for the problem of sin – placing our faith in Jesus. He mentions the “way out” before He mentions the sin.

Looking at verses 24-26 fills out the picture some more. It says, “Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he declares sinners to be right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.

God told us in verse 23 that we have all sinned. If we are honest we know deep in our hearts we know we have fallen short. However God did not leave us there, out of His love and concern for us He gave us Jesus to take the punishment for our sin. That means that no matter who we are or what we have done, we can be forgiven and declared righteous in God’s eyes. That is some good news. In fact I think it is great news!
