Head and heart prayers

May 3rd, 2007

I’ve been reading back over my prayer journal recently. This is where I record my prayer requests, my thoughts and the things God has been saying to me.

One thing I have noticed is that I pray different types of prayers depending on the situation. They could loosely be called head prayers or heart prayers. Sometimes they are about different situations or sometimes the same.

Let me give you an example of a head prayer…

“Dear God, I pray that Your will is done in this situation. I pray that you will let all know in this the right course of action. I pray You will guide our steps to bring the right outcome. Amen”

Now let’s look at a heart prayer…

“Dear God, please, please, please let this work out. I pray that this will all fall into place. I believe Lord that this is the right direction and the way to go. Please let this happen. Amen”

Hmmm they are a bit different. One very measured and diligently seeking God’s will for the situation and the other is pleading for it to happen.

When I paused and reflected on it for a while, I concluded that both head and heart prayers have there place. Both are expressing what we are hoping. We want a situation to come to pass which we feel is the right way to go, but we don’t want to step out of God’s will for our lives.

I think balance is the key. Right now I am reminded of Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethesemane. He said, “Father take this cup from me, but not my will, nay Yours be done”.

What sort of prayers do you pray…are they more from the heart or are they more from the head? Or is it a combination of the two?
