Help with understanding the Trinity

When I first became a Christian one of the things I really struggled with was the idea of the Trinity. People used the idea of the apple (core, flesh, skin) and the water (ice, steam, water) to explain it to me. But I still never got the idea of three in one.

It wasn’t until I saw a copy of the attached image (you can click here to see the full sized version) that I really got it and was able to process it properly. It changed how I saw the Trinity and it was no longer the “mystery” as many people called it.

The key thought of the Trinity is one God in three persons – Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Three distinct persons, but they are one in love, one in purpose, one in unity, one in relationship and so on. All are equal members of the Godhead and all are eternal.

The diagram shows that God is actually the sum total of the three person. You can see that it shows Father, Son and Holy Spirit as the three members of the Trinity. Then it says the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is not the Father. But they are all God.

So when I talk about God on this blog, I am talking about the total of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – the Trinity. At times I will talk about the individual members but will always refer to them as the Father, Son or Spirit.

I hope that helps you if you are having troubles with the idea of the Trinity.
